Body changes are considered normal so long as they make the body organs more efficient in doing their functions. When these changes happen with pain and certain abnormalities which can cause harm than any good, they might be symptoms of a certain illness. If you experience irregular menstrual periods for several months now, have excessive hair growth, or high cholesterol despite having a balanced diet, you can be experiencing an abnormality that is connected to how your ovaries are at work.

When you have experienced these symptoms, it's possible that you have the PCOS syndrome. PCOS syndrome (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) is that hormonal complication in women that carry with it different symptoms besides the ones mentioned.  The other symptoms include acne, obesity, infertility, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

You cannot find some medical explanation for the causes of the PCOS syndrome. Based on some observations, women with PCOS syndrome often have a close relative such as a mother or sister who has the same problem. However, it is not scientifically proven that PCOS syndrome can be inherited. Another probable cause is the presence of small cysts inside the ovary and there are also women who have cysts but don't suffer the PCOS syndrome. An abnormality in insulin production is commonly observed in women with the PCOS syndrome but this can only be a result of the excessive production of androgen in the human body.

PCOS Syndrome is often diagnosed by doctors after having seen the above mentioned symptoms. Since these symptoms are also symptoms of other illnesses, physicians advise their patients to have physical examination which includes ultrasound, computed tomography, and also magnetic reasoning. Ultrasound imaging is also commonly used since it does not make use of radiation thus it is safer for women who may be pregnant or not. MRI and CT scan are highly expensive but are more efficient procedures. But CT Scan can be harmful as it employs x-rays and also injected dyes.

PCOS syndrome is highly treatable. Treatments vary according to women's age. Birth control pills are advised for women who want to have birth control while those who don't are given treatments that would let them experience regular menstrual flow each month.  For women suffering from infertility, a substance called clomiphene is prescribed in order to trigger ovulation. When these treatment methods don't result positively, ovarian drilling may be required to stop the symptoms of PCOS syndrome.
